Push Notifications: Best Practices Without Annoying Your Users

Push Notifications: Best Practices Without Annoying Your Users
Push notifications are one of the most powerful engagement tools available to a mobile app, and also one of the fastest ways to get uninstalled if used carelessly.

The single biggest mistake is sending too many, too generic. A notification that doesn't feel personally relevant to that specific user trains them to ignore or disable notifications entirely, at which point you've permanently lost that engagement channel for this user, not just for one message.

Timing matters as much as content. A notification sent at 7am or 11pm, regardless of how relevant the content is, tends to generate irritation rather than engagement. Respecting reasonable hours, and ideally the user's own timezone and typical usage patterns, meaningfully improves how notifications are received.

Personalisation and relevance drive the best results. A notification tied to something the user actually did -- an abandoned cart, a price drop on something they viewed, an update on something they specifically follow -- performs far better than a broadcast message sent to your entire user base regardless of their behaviour.

Giving users control matters more than most apps assume. Allowing users to choose which types of notifications they want (order updates yes, promotional offers no, for example) rather than an all-or-nothing toggle keeps more users engaged long-term than forcing a binary choice that often results in users disabling everything.

The businesses getting the most value from push notifications treat every message as something that has to earn its place, asking specifically what value this exact notification provides to this exact user, rather than treating notifications as a free, unlimited broadcast channel.
