Email marketing gets declared dead roughly once a year, and yet it remains one of the most consistently high-return digital marketing channels available to small and mid-sized businesses, largely because you own the list rather than renting attention from a platform's algorithm.
The businesses getting real value from email in 2026 have moved past generic monthly newsletters and toward targeted, triggered sends. A welcome email sequence for new sign-ups, a reminder email for an abandoned enquiry or cart, and a re-engagement email for customers who haven't purchased in a while all consistently outperform a single "here's what's new this month" blast sent to everyone.
Segmentation matters more than list size. A smaller list split by actual customer interest or purchase history and sent relevant content will outperform a much larger undifferentiated list sent the same generic message, both in engagement and in avoiding the spam folder.
Mobile formatting is no longer optional -- the majority of emails in India are opened on a phone first, so a newsletter designed for a wide desktop screen with small text will lose a large share of its audience before they even read the first line.
Building the list itself matters as much as what you send. A simple, clearly-valuable incentive to sign up (a discount, a useful guide, early access to new products) tends to build a more engaged list than a bare "subscribe to our newsletter" box that gives no reason to actually do so. Combined with WhatsApp for immediate, transactional communication, email remains the right channel for the longer-form, less time-sensitive messages that build an ongoing relationship with your customers.
