App Store Optimization (ASO) is the mobile equivalent of SEO -- the practice of making your app easier to discover in Google Play and the Apple App Store's search results, rather than relying entirely on external marketing to drive downloads.
Your app's title and short description carry significant search weight, similar to a webpage's title tag. Including the actual words people search for (your city, your service category) rather than only your brand name meaningfully improves discoverability for people who don't already know your app exists.
Screenshots and preview videos affect conversion more than most developers expect -- a potential user typically decides whether to download within a few seconds of viewing your store listing, and clear, benefit-focused screenshots (showing what the app actually does, with brief captions) convert meaningfully better than generic screenshots.
Ratings and reviews function as both a trust signal to potential users and a ranking factor with the app stores themselves. Prompting satisfied users for a rating at the right moment (after a successful action, not immediately on app open) tends to produce both more ratings and better ones.
Regular updates matter for ranking as well as for user trust -- an app that hasn't been updated in a long time signals abandonment to both users and, to some extent, the store algorithms themselves.
For a new app with a limited marketing budget, getting these basics right before spending on paid app install campaigns is usually the better sequencing -- there's little value driving paid traffic to a store listing that isn't converting visitors into downloads in the first place.
